The New York Mets made the postseason for the first time since 2022 after finishing with a record of 89-73 and second in the National League East.

After making a run to the National League Championship Series, the Mets went into the offseason and made likely one of the biggest moves in franchise history by signing free agent Juan Soto.

After being in talks with multiple different teams, Soto signed a 15-year contract worth $765 million.

The Mets brought in one big free agent but have not re-signed first baseman Pete Alonso.

MLB analyst and former Mets GM Jim Duquette warned what losing Alonso could mean.

“They still need Pete, or somebody like him, to protect the investment that they have in Juan Soto in particular,” Duquette said, via MLB Network Radio on SiriusXM.

Duquette questions the ability of Mark Vientos to protect Soto in the lineup and believes that the Mets need Alonso to fill that role.

Alonso has played all six seasons of his MLB career with New York.

In 2024, Alonso played 162 games and batted .240 with 34 home runs, 88 RBIs and a .788 OPS.

With the 2025 season getting closer, Alonso will be a name to keep an eye on to see if he can come to terms with the Mets or if he decides to sign with a different team.

The Mets will be seeking their first division title since 2015 in their first season with Soto on the roster.
