HOUSTON, TEXAS - AUGUST 17: Shay Whitcomb #10 of the Houston Astros scores in his major league debut in the third inning against the Chicago White Sox at Minute Maid Park on August 17, 2024 in Houston, Texas.

When you’re having a season like the 2024 Chicago White Sox, every day is a new day to set an embarrassing record for unprecedented futility.

Once again, the White Sox set another awful record yesterday that officially ends any chances of them making the most historic comeback of all time this season.

According to Baseball Reference’s Jessica Brand, the White Sox were officially eliminated from postseason contention after falling 6-1 to the Houston Astros on Saturday, and it’s the earliest calendar date elimination not only in the Wild Card era but also the division era.

Today is August 17th, and the Chicago White Sox are now mathematically eliminated from playoff contention.

This is the earliest calendar date elimination not only in the wild card era, but also the divisional era.

The 30-94 White Sox currently sit 40.5 games out of the AL Central race and 38.5 games out of a Wild Card spot with only 38 games left.

The White Sox had won three of their last eight games following their historic 21-game losing streak, but Saturday’s loss officially ended the comeback of the century.

It’s tough to pinpoint one spot where the team needs to improve next season because the reality is that this team is bad in every possible way.

The Sox are 30th in the league in runs scored, sitting a whopping 65 runs behind the second-to-last-place Miami Marlins in that category, while also ranking 29th in team ERA at 4.85 ahead of just the Colorado Rockies.

After setting this awful record just days after the 21-game losing streak, Sox fans have to hope the embarrassment stops soon and the team can get hot before it sets the most embarrassing record of them all for the worst record of the modern era and/or most losses in a season.
