The New York Mets were eliminated from the 2024 postseason after losing to the Los Angeles Dodgers in the National League Championship Series.
Now that the season is over, the Mets will focus on the offseason which includes many of their key players entering free agency.
Major League Baseball analyst Jon Heyman revealed questions that the Mets are facing including free agents Sean Manaea, Jose Quintana, Luis Severino, and Pete Alonso.
“They are going to have to rebuild the pitching staff,” Heyman said.
The Mets have their three best veteran pitchers entering free agency this offseason, and Heyman seems to believe that Manaea is a probable opt-out.
Severino and Quintana had exceptional postseasons and will require some money to be spent to keep them in New York.
Overall, Heyman thinks that the Mets will need to bring in at least three starting pitchers for next season, and that is before getting on the topic of Alonso.
Heyman mentions that if Alonso did not have the postseason performance that he did, then there would be almost zero percent chance of him coming back.
Alonso is a hometown hero to Mets fans and had several clutch home runs this postseason that he seemed to lack during the regular season.
It will be interesting to see how the Mets organization attacks free agency this offseason and who they decide to spend their money on.
Some people are hinting at the possibility of going all in to get superstar Juan Soto to join the Mets from the New York Yankees.
