The New York Mets are coming off of a better season than most people probably expected as they made a playoff run to the National League Championship Series.
After finishing the season with a record of 89-73 and squeezing into the postseason via a wild-card spot, the Mets knocked off the Milwaukee Brewers and Philadelphia Phillies before falling to the Los Angeles Dodgers.
The Mets stayed in the headlines this offseason as they signed free agent Juan Soto to a 15-year deal worth $765 million.
Though the Mets signed Soto, they have yet to re-sign first baseman Pete Alonso.
Mets owner Steve Cohen used an interesting word to describe their talks with Alonso.
“Personally, this has been an exhausting conversation and negotiation,” Cohen said, via MLB Network.

Cohen mentions that the Mets have already brought in multiple players this offseason and it has been expensive.
It appears Cohen doesn’t want to pay Alonso the amount of money he is asking for, and that could potentially be due to how much the team spent on Soto and others.
Alonso has played all six seasons of his MLB career with New York.
In 2024, Alonso played 162 games and batted .240 with 34 home runs, 88 RBIs and a .788 OPS.
Though Alonso is a fan favorite, Cohen appears to be saying that the Mets simply can’t afford him at the number he wants.
