The New York Yankees are doing a good job in the wake of Juan Soto leaving them to sign with the New York Mets, as they have already pivoted quickly to sign free agent starter Max Fried and trade for closer Devin Williams.

The Yankees reportedly aren’t done yet and are expected to strongly pursue one other major free agent.

“The New York Yankees now are expected to put on a full-court press to sign [Alex] Bregman and move Jazz Chisholm to second base,” Bob Nightengale of USA Today wrote, via Fireside Yankees.

The Yankees being willing to offer $760 million for Soto is an indication that they have plenty of money to spend, and landing Bregman wouldn’t even make a dent compared to what keeping Soto would have cost.

Bregman is among the best remaining free agents and is looking more likely to be leaving the Houston Astros, where he won two World Series championships during his stellar nine-year tenure.

He’d fit in seamlessly at third base in New York and allow Chisholm to move back to his more natural position.

There is some cause for concern, as Bregman just posted the lowest OPS of his career at .768 and will likely command more than $150 million despite turning 31 before the 2025 season begins.

However, he’d be a huge addition to the Yankees’ lineup and would bring some much-needed depth and star power.
