According to The Athletic’s Will Sammon, the Mets declined their team option on right-handed relief pitcher Phil Maton, and he will become a free agent.
The Mets declined their team option on right-handed reliever Phil Maton, league sources told The Athletic. He will receive a buyout and be a free agent.
Maton is a Veteran relief pitcher who came into the league in 2017 and has pitched for five different organizations.
After starting 2024 with the Tampa Bay Rays, the Mets acquired Maton mid-season for a possible playoff push.
Maton appeared in 31 games for the Mets where he had a 2.51 earned run average and 30 strikeouts in 28.2 innings pitched.
In the NLCS against the Dodgers, Maton appeared in three games and threw 3.2 innings allowing four hits, two earned runs, and three walks while striking out three.
The Mets made their first NLCS appearance since losing the World Series back in 2015 and proved that they can make a run in the postseason.
In 2025, the Mets will attempt to win their first National League East title since 2015 and earn another chance at a World Series title.
One name to watch this offseason is free agent slugger Pete Alonso to see if he returns in a Mets uniform for 2025.
