The Miami Marlins are not the most popular team in MLB.
The fact they haven’t been regulars in the postseason and have been continually rebuilding for the better part of the last 20 years doesn’t help, but for many other reasons, they just don’t get too many fans to loanDepot Park.
Miami usually ranks in the bottom five in average attendance per game.
However, the city itself has proven that depending on the circumstances, they can fill the stadium or take thousands of people there.
For example, in last year’s World Baseball Classic, the vast majority of the games held at loanDepot Park were sold out or close to it.
Granted, the biggest reason why these games had the stadium packed was specific national teams playing.
But the crowds were always cheerful, full of instruments, chants, noises, and colors: flags, jerseys, and many other attractive visual elements.
People loved it, and now, they will get to enjoy it at Marlins home games in 2024: perhaps not to that extent, but there will be flags and musical instruments allowed in the stands.
The main reason why the team is allowing this is to try and get more people to join the party.
They want attendance numbers to increase, and this could potentially help: people can go to the stadium and have a good time with a show within the show.
They also need to invest and contend, though: in 31 seasons of existence, they have made the postseason four times.
