Diamondbacks Insider Details Plan For Newly-Acquired Ace

The Arizona Diamondbacks were determined to add to their rotation this offseason.

They realized, during the World Series, that they were a pitcher or two short of mounting a real World Series-winning powerhouse.

They went out and brought in Eduardo Rodriguez on a multi-year deal.

However, the lefty went down with an injury just before the start of the season.

Now, the team recognized that they couldn’t enter the 2024 campaign without another top arm in the rotation.

As a result, they announced the signing of left-hander Jordan Montgomery on Tuesday, on a one-year, $25 million deal, with a vesting option for 2025.

Diamondbacks insider Nick Piecoro announced the organization’s plans for the southpaw, given the fact he missed all of spring training.

“Montgomery is not expected to be included on the Diamondbacks’ Opening Day roster. A source said he told the team he will agree to a minor league assignment to ramp up. Since he won’t be on the roster to start, he won’t be eligible to receive a qualifying offer after the season,” Piecoro tweeted.

Montgomery is forfeiting his right to receive a qualifying offer after the year, but he really needs some time in the minor leagues to ramp up and catch up with his teammates.

Montgomery represents an excellent addition to the D-Backs rotation and will help give their pitching corps more depth and quality after Zac Gallen and Merrill Kelly.

He posted a 3.20 ERA between the St. Louis Cardinals and the Texas Rangers, and wound up winning the World Series with the latter.
