The San Francisco Giants just lost top starter Blake Snell for at least a few weeks with a groin strain.
It’s yet another obstacle in a really forgettable season for the reigning NL Cy Young award winner, who has a 9.51 ERA in 23.2 innings in 2024 so far.
Thanks to his agent’s advice, he didn’t sign until March 19, and put himself in a position to fail by waiting so long to commit himself to a team.
His spring training started very late, he hardly faced any hitters before that point, and everything has fallen apart since that moment.
Now, he is back on the injured list.
His manager on the Giants, Bob Melvin, seems confident that his stay on the shelf won’t be too long, though.
“SF Giants Bob Melvin is hopeful Blake Snell can return within a few weeks after his mild groin strain: ‘Hopefully he’s back throwing soon and doesn’t have to go through an extended period of build up and rehab and stuff like that again, so hopefully we caught a break on that,’” MLB insider Bob Nightengale tweeted, quoting Melvin.

The hope is that Snell doesn’t take too long to return to throwing.
If he does, he will probably have to restart a throwing program from scratch.
Hearing Melvin’s words, however, it seems like the Giants dodged a bullet because the strain is mild.
In order to right the ship, Snell needs to be fully healthy and it could be a couple of weeks before he reaches that point.
Still, the Giants are counting on him to lead the rotation to the promised land once he returns.
